NEW MEMBERS
NEW MEMBERS
We welcome new members! Ever fancied being someone else? Well, acting is a great way of taking on a new persona. If you've never experienced the buzz of pulling off a dazzling performance and getting acclaim from an appreciative audience, we can give you that opportunity. We like to involve new members as soon as we can, even if that means only a small part at first. If you would rather work behind the scenes, there are plenty of roles for you to make your mark, including set-building and decorating, sound and lighting, props, costumes, make-up, prompt, publicity, front-of-house, refreshments as well as producer, stage manager and director.
We put on two productions a year - in May and November - and occasionally enter drama festivals too. Usually we discuss and select the next play as soon as we can after finishing the last one. After casting, we rehearse on Wednesday evenings for about 3 months, with Mondays added for about 2 months. For the two weekends before performance evenings (usually Wednesday through to Saturday) it's all hands on deck to help build the set, dress and paint it, then do a technical rehearsal.

LAST PRODUCTION
PACK OF LIES BY HUGH WHITEMORE

This cold war thriller set in suburban London in 1960–61 was not only recommended to us by one of our Patrons, BAFTA-award winning writer Laurence Marks (of “Birds of a Feather” fame as well as many hit TV dramas) but we are honoured and delighted that Laurence will be Directing the production with Debi Lisburne Diacon as his Co-Director.

Set during the Cold War in Ruislip, north-west London, this tense drama is based on a true story. Barbara and Bob live with their teenage daughter Julie in a quiet surburban street when a high-level plain clothes policeman arrives to ask whether he can place a surveillance look-out officer in their front bedroom – just for a few days. The family are not told why nor who they are trying to catch or what they might have done. Daughter Julie finds it exciting, father Bob is pragmatic but Barbara finds the whole thing intrusive, worrying and extremely stressful.

Co-Director Debi Lisburne Diacon said “Well, here we are again today in 2024 with things extremely tense between Russia and Europe. Topically relevant, Hugh Whitemore has taken this true story from the Cold War era and given us a play which deals in lies and betrayal. This should lead us to question how well do we ever know anyone – even those we believe ourselves to be closest to? Are there Russian spies embedded into your society and friendships? How would you know? How would you feel about being forced into betraying your best friend?'

REVIEWS
Our first reviews have arrived –
"This was a brilliant choice of play. Not only was it utterly engaging during the superb performance, in terms of the story and the characters; the way it revolved around the impact that lies, deceptions and loss of trust can have on individuals and on society, throwing a spotlight on different perspectives, left one pondering on these questions long afterward."
Heather Kay from Daily Info – to read the full review click here.

"This highly polished performance from the entire cast was a credit to Bartholomew Players and the directors, Laurence Marks and Debi Lisburn Diacon."

Nigel James from Oxford Drama Network – to read the full review click here.

"The tale of the Krogers is a compelling story for the ages, and the play has a strong narrative thrust, but the ensemble was also able to explore the work’s underlying themes of truth and lies; of friendship, trust and betrayal. The presentation worked on several levels."
